Shubert Plans to Use Health Care MBA to Make a Difference

Tripp Shubert's advice to prospective Owen students—"Get involved, and give back to a community that thrives on each member's commitment"—is what he's always lived by. In high school, he began volunteering for the March of Dimes. As an undergrad at Vanderbilt, he started a dance marathon that has since grown into $100,000+ annual fundraiser for Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. During seven years as a high school math teacher in Nashville and Savannah, Georgia, he gave back by coaching basketball and tennis.

Guided by these experiences, Tripp sought an MBA so he could pursue a career in nonprofit management. Once he got to Owen, however, he was attracted by the Health Care MBA program "because of the quality of the faculty, the availability of many great opportunities and the significance of health care today in the United States."

True to form, at Owen, Tripp participated in a multitude of student activities, including serving as president of the Owen Student Government Association. He was also part of a student team that wrote strategic and fundraising plans for a children's hospital in Ghana. Upon completion of the project, the team had the unique opportunity to present their work to former Senate Majority Leader (and current professor) Bill Frist and others interested in international health affairs.

"I used to shape young minds through education and coaching," he says. "Soon I hope to shape health care policy and business through the next stages of my professional career."
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
