Recharging Her Career

New Yorker Gains Nashville Bona Fides

Gianna DelliCarpini gleaned most of what she knows about electric cars from a marketing course at Owen with Professor Steve Hoeffler. Gianna, who comes from a “big Italian family” in New York, apparently was a quick study; her parents purchased an electric Chevy Volt after she gushed about the car’s features.

Perhaps the electric car, which promises a “reboot” of sorts for automobiles, is an apt metaphor for Gianna’s own career. As an associate at Lehman Brothers, she survived the firm’s bankruptcy but was forced to consider, as she watched coworkers being let go, how she could transform herself into a competitive candidate “in a recession environment.”

When Gianna first arrived at Owen, Professor Tim Vogus helped her formulate visions “of all the things I wanted to do” into a more concrete career path, which took her to a position with Capgemini Consulting after graduation. “I wouldn’t be entering the next phase of my career without a Vanderbilt MBA,” she says. “I am smarter, happier, and more excited now than I have ever been.”

Along with pursuing a new path in Nashville, Gianna competed in marathons and enjoyed “exploring outside the walls of Owen,” and recorded another marketing accomplishment that is perhaps even more impressive than the electric car sale. Thanks to her, Gianna’s parents have become converted fans of country music.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
