Aspiring Marketer Goes Global

After immigrating to the US from India when she was five, Amrita Dutta-Gupta watched her parents create a successful business from scratch. Their example, she says, instilled in her the interest and motivation to enter the world of business. Amrita co-founded an IT consulting company and worked in business development after earning a B.A. in economics and political science.

When she realized her long-term interest was in global marketing, Amrita also knew, from her father’s example, the value of a graduate business degree. “Since I lacked a traditional marketing background,” she says, “I felt an MBA would allow me to learn more about the theory and quantitative aspects of marketing I could translate into a career in an industry I was more passionate about joining.”

She picked Vanderbilt not simply because Amrita did her undergraduate work there, she says, but because of the “strong professors, small class sizes, module system, collaborative environment, study-abroad opportunities and the passion I saw in the students I met.”

At Owen, Amrita was part of seven different student organizations, serving as president of the Global Business Association, Student Government senator, and fundraising director for Project Pyramid, a global antipoverty initiative. She also visited seven new countries as part of study abroad or immersion experiences. On these trips, she says, “the exposure to diverse cultures has allowed me to see how markets, economies, needs, tastes, styles and preferences vary—an invaluable asset in my pursuit of a career in global marketing.”

Amrita currently is a Marketing Strategy Manager at Sears Holdings Corporation outside of Chicago. The wide variety of marketing experience she gained during business school enabled her to enter a new industry which is truly global-retail.
Since 1969, Vanderbilt Business has been building a new kind of business leader. The kind who aren't afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. Who don't think they've heard it all before (or pretend they will ever know it all). The persistent kind. People who are ready to work harder and dig deeper, and who put ideas over ego and performance over pedigree.

We attract the kind who are looking not only to succeed in the business world but to shape it for the better. While also shaping their skills, their careers and their futures. All while shaping our own community in ways that make a lasting difference for themselves and others.

You'll find stories here of Vanderbilt Businesspeople, people much like you, who have done all these and more.

We invite you to become a World Shaper yourself. Or to recruit one. And, most of all, to read how Vanderbilt Business has become such a richly shaping experience for so many. Close
